Watercolor Batik workshop description:

Learn a new painting technique using the batik method with watercolor. Watercolor batik is the process of using traditional watercolor paint and wax to create unique and beautiful batik-style paintings on Japanese rice paper. This process is similar to the age old technique where melted wax is applied to fabric as a resist and then the fabric is dipped in dye.

Students will begin the process with a drawing and then learn to create highlights and shadows, as well as how to mask areas of the project with wax.

Non-Traditional Watercolor description:

Step away from traditional watercolor using alternate methods- palette knife painting, extreme wet into wet (to achieve shallow depth of field), and much more. This class emphasizes a different way of thinking about watercolor using a variety of non-traditional techniques creating depth with opaque paints or painting your dark colors first.

Ryan Fox is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society as well as numerous state and regional societies. “I am a story teller. I tell stories with my paintings of places I have been and things I have seen. I believe that a painting should not only tell a story but should have a story behind it. All my paintings do.”

Tom began painting at an early age and has had many years of study, some with well known artist. Two of Tom’s favorite western artists are Thomas Moran and Charles M. Russell. Tom is a guest teacher at Savannah College of Arts and Design (SCAD) twice annually. Tom is a resident of Central Florida, Tom has been commissioned by government agencies, corporations, environmental groups, clubs and private collectors. In answer to popular demand, he typically produces his watercolor landscapes in a series of three or five paintings around a specific theme. Tom’s art can be found internationally in many private and corporate collections, including commissioned paintings displayed in the Florida State Capitol Building, Walt Disney World Corporation, the Omni Corporation and Museums. Tom’s work has been featured in many books, magazine articles, posters and brochures. Tom shares his passion for art and love of nature with students of varying skill levels through international workshops, demonstrations, instructional watercolor books and DVDs.

“Tom Jones is a painter who possesses such power that by dipping his brushes in colored water only he gives us the feeling of being before nature itself. Master of his craft, he obtains extremely difficult effects such as moving our soul at the sight of a beam of sunlight piercing through the foliage of the forest.”

“That is magic; That is a great painter.” Pablo Sansegundo-Castaneda

Watercolor Workshops
Sterling Edwards, TWSA, CSPWC, WPA, NWS

Painting Loose and Expressive Watercolors

This will be a watercolor workshop for all skill levels that will focus on painting a wide variety of subjects using loose watercolor techniques. Sterling will demonstrate how to use large stiff bristle brushes for washes of color and creating expressive textures as he paints a landscape, a floral, and a stylized painting. Who knows, he might even show how to paint an abstract one afternoon.

Each morning of the class, he will paint something different so that everyone can see how his techniques can be employed in any painting. There will be plenty of creative watercolor techniques explained and demonstrated in this class including negative painting, building a strong composition, sgraffito, saving areas of unpainted white paper and building rich dark values, charging and glazing colors, overlapping shapes to create depth and dimension, creative color mixing, working wet into wet to achieve soft edges, and much more.

Students will have plenty of painting time throughout the workshop as they work on their own paintings. Sterling will be available to assist and answer questions throughout each day. It is also not required to paint what Sterling painted each day. He encourages everyone to paint what they want but to try and incorporate some of his techniques to expand their skill level.

Sterling Edwards is very well known for his informative watermedia workshops and his laid back and sometimes humorous style of teaching. Come prepared to learn, laugh, and paint.
